The Centrality of the Home

31 Biblical Virtues to Pray for Your Children

by Bob Hostetler

I came across this prayer list on the internet and have been using this list in my daily prayer for my children. The original article is available online here, if you’d like to read the full text. I’ve only included the prayer list with Chinese translation here. I believe the Bible translation used is “NIV” in the original text, and I use Chinese Union Version (CUV) for most of the translation. You may also download a colorful calendar in PDF format for this prayer list.

Memorizing Bible Verses in my Family

I was asked by a mother from my former church in Virginia (CCCVA) to share about how I implement the memorization of “Fighter Verses” at home. I want to put my sharing here so anyone who is interested could learn from each other. In fact, you may find out there is no secret and every family might have different ways to effectively implement their spiritual activities with their children at home. If my sharing could be helpful to any of you who are interested, it's all God's grace and His glory.

Fighter Verses of the Week

The Fighter Verse of the Week is a 5-year church-wide weekly Bible memory program held at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN. The details of the program and all the verses selected into the program could be found or downloaded here.

I have started using the verses provided by the program and added the Chinese United Version of the same verse to let my family memorize it each week since late month. All the English (ESV) and Chinese (CUV) verses I have compiled could be found here.

(School at My Home)

Raising Children Who Hope in the Triumph of God

"The most important school a child should ever attend is the home. The most influential theological teachers he should ever have are Mom and Dad. And the unifying theme in the curriculum of this school is God—who is the beginning and the goal of all education. The family is a school for instruction, a boot camp for training young soldiers of Christ, a fortress for protection, a hospital for healing, and a launching pad for missionary zeal."

PEERS Test

The PEERS test, developed by Dan Smithwick of the Nehemiah Institute, measures the Bible's influence on a person's perceptions of the world in five areas: Politics(P), Education(E), Economics(E), Religion(R) and Social Issues(S). The complete test consists of 70 questions and a mini version with 20 questions is available on line.

Click here to take the mini PEERS test

The results of the PEERS test taken by Christian students attending public schools and Christian students in typical Christian schools from 1988 to 2000 are available in the chart below. The chart shows the downward trend in Christian worldview scores for Christian students in both school systems. However, the good news is that Christian students who have received home school or classical Christian, or Principle Approach training are scoring at consistently higher levels.

Click here to view the chart online

Interpretation of the PEERS test score:

Biblical Theism worldview- 70 - 100
Moderate Christian worldview- 30-69
Secular Humanist worldview- 0-29
Socialist worldview- less than 0

Below are two articles with different views about choosing schools to educate our children,

Top 100 Educational Web Sites of 2005

Homeschool.com asked their 7,000 product testers which web sites they found the most useful, both for homeschooling and for after-school help. From a statistician's point of view, 7,000 sample size is large enough to provide a good assessment of these web sites even though it's not a random sample. Their top 100 picks are now listed here.

Probably not many people know that this week (2/13 - 2/19) is Random Acts of Kindness Week, there is a great resource with stuff to print, activities and more in RAoK web site. All to inspire you and your children to perform random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.

Things I Learned from My Mother

As a homeschool father, I did not know September is the National Homeschool Month until I received an e-letter from FCPL (Fairfax County Public Library). Do you know that there are approximately 2,500 homeschool students in the Fairfax county? This number has increased by about 40% in recent two years. To celebrate the National Homeschool Month, I'm going to share with all of you a humorous posting I read from a homeschool forum sponsored by Sonlight Curriculum.

Things I Learned from My Mother smile

I OWE MY MOTHER

1. My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE.
"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning."
